Unhappy Thinning hair

I've always moaned about how thin and wispy Mazie's coat is and I came across this article yesterday - so herein lies the reason why.

How Organ Function Affects Hair Loss:

Because the kidneys, liver, intestines, and other organs regulate the nutrients in the blood, diseases and drugs affecting these organs directly influence hair loss. For example, pets with inflammatory bowel disease, cancer or on chemotherapy often have dull, thinning hair throughout. Pets with kidney failure often have bedraggled, dull coats and may have a strong smell of urine from their skin. Pets with liver failure have orange-yellow skin (jaundice), and nails that grow long but are weak and flaky.

What I was wondering was - will the steroids make her coat better or worse

Dogs who are on prednisone for a long period of time are especially prone to muscle wasting. This particular side effect can be counteracted to some degree. Pet owners should provide the pet with daily exercise to maintain muscle tone and the diet can be altered to include more protein.

Another undesirable issue associated with prednisone is hair loss in dogs, especially those who receive a high dose and/or long term steroid therapy. The dog's coat will thin and you may find that the fur can be pulled out with very little force.
